We should start calling vetted history what it is: TRUE AMERICAN HISTORY; rather than Critical Race Theory. All students must be taught the truth and must construct their understanding based on reality.

This is VITAL work and we cannot be deterred!
Jennifer Pokorney | Norwalk, CT
I believe that my job is to present facts from the multi perspective lens to allow students to critically think about right and wrong, just vs unjust, and facts vs opinion/bias. Students can draw their own conclusions but fairly and with empathy.
Karissa Stotts | Blaine, MN
I teach critical race theory because without it, we have no understanding of reality and are stripped of our humanity.

We must acknowledge our history and learn from it, not run from it. Deliberate systems of oppression, misinformation and exclusion are at the heart of white supremacy. I will not perpetuate this cycle in my teaching.

In order to bring up and teach the leaders of tomorrow, who will make great changes and strides in our world & community, they need to know where we came from and be exposed to ALL SIDES of history! Banning a curriculum is CENSORSHIP. A lot of people would be up in arms if many of the white-focused, one-sided patriotic teachings were banned from classrooms today. Therefore, this should not be done on the other side. Our students deserve to know the whole truth and multiple viewpoints of history.
Kelli Gray CL
It is my moral and ethical obligation to always teach the truth, and be an example to my students to speak up and speak out against injustice.
Tracie Dunn | Concord, MA
Lisa Mannion | Peekskill, NY
Teaching ALL perspectives of history is teaching the truth and I swear to do right by our youth.
Valerie Johnson | Chicago, IL
I believe that social justice is dependent upon every U.S. citizen fully understanding U.S. history, including its cumulative and contemporary, social, political, and economic consequences.
Eleanor Lear | Basking Ridge, NJ
Fear of losing privilege should not drive policy. It is past time for restoration and reparations.
Jon Mundorf | Gainesville, FL
Rob Naborn | Jenkintown, PA
I am fed up with having to fight lies being fed by rightwing agitators.
Bryant Sculos | Northampton, MA
Alyssa Wallace | San Diego, CA
Marisol Ibanez Tintorer | Long Beach, CA
It is my responsibility to students to be a bridge to our collective histories. The CRT push back is an insult to everyone. We learn, grow, evolve when we use education to lift & not suppress the truth.

As an educator who is serious about teaching the truth I will not be bullied into silence. I will do my part in the fight for equity and equality by making sure my students are most equipped to fight this ugliness in the real world.

Yes, the truth of American history needs to be taught, but also its impact on the rest of the world, such as its role in WWII. I just finished teaching a college-level course on the Holocaust, and could not believe how little the students knew about the rest of the world’s participation in the war! They seemed to believe that WWII was ended by the US alone!

“When you begin to do things that raise the achievement of the poorest and disenfranchised students, you may not always get applause. You need to be ready for that.” Dr. Asa Hilliard

“Resistance is a powerful motivator precisely because it enables us to fulfill our longing to achieve our goals while letting us boldly recognize and name the obstacles to those achievements.”
    Dr. Derrick Bell

Our young people deserve the truth and it is our kuleana (responsibility) to give space and opportunity for the truth and the difficult conversations.

Social justice is a major theme of my Humanities 7 course, and my school uses Dr. Gholdy Muhammad’s HILL framework (development of identity, skills, knowledge, Criticality) to frame our entire curriculum. Student agency through research work and essay writing, and action-oriented civic engagement work, define what we “cover” in my course.
