The true history of this country must be acknowledged and taught. If a law has to be passed to hide the atrocities visited in people here and around the world in the name of the US, that’s your indication that light must be directed to those dark acts, we teach about them, and attempt to help students understand them. Only then can we help them move forward with truth.
Kirsten Smith | San Carlos, CA
The truth will break is free from the chains of the past!
Ron Cox | Miami, FL
I will teach truth to power regardless of attempted suppression of academic freedom. I stand with my fellow educators and am ready to join in collective efforts to support academic and intellectual freedom at all levels of education.
Crystal Yakel-Kuntz | Kansas City, KS
In order to live in peace and joy, we must teach historical truth that moves us toward justice and equity.
Charlie Potter | Shanghai, CN
We need to look at a complete, or near complete, record of history, and engage with the varying perspectives of historical actors, both those who promote the good and the bad. I live in China, which routinely tries to mask its past challenges -- so teaching a full view of history, especially of slavery and the Black experience, is something I consider patriotic, rather than propagandistic.
Emile Schepers | Woodbridge, VA
lies about "critical race theory" are being used by reactionary politicians in my state and nationwide to fire up the base of some of our most reactionary politicians; "collateral damage" will be children, families, teachers and the nation.
Rachel Scherba | Encinitas, CA
Teaching the truth is my obligation.
Sara Townsend | Rio Linda, CA
We cannot eliminated systemic racism if we don’t teach the true history of our country.
Julie Elvick | Tucson, AZ
The only way we will save our democracy is to teach American History - all of it✊?

I firmly believe that those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it. Children deserve an honest education.
Veronica Sousa | Brooklyn , NY
Rebecca Longworth | Albany, CA

The reality of our American history and contemporary society is too important to lie to children about.

As an educator who is serious about teaching the truth I will not be bullied into silence. I will do my part in the fight for equity and equality by making sure my students are most equipped to fight this ugliness in the real world.

Yes, the truth of American history needs to be taught, but also its impact on the rest of the world, such as its role in WWII. I just finished teaching a college-level course on the Holocaust, and could not believe how little the students knew about the rest of the world’s participation in the war! They seemed to believe that WWII was ended by the US alone!

“When you begin to do things that raise the achievement of the poorest and disenfranchised students, you may not always get applause. You need to be ready for that.” Dr. Asa Hilliard

“Resistance is a powerful motivator precisely because it enables us to fulfill our longing to achieve our goals while letting us boldly recognize and name the obstacles to those achievements.”
    Dr. Derrick Bell

Our young people deserve the truth and it is our kuleana (responsibility) to give space and opportunity for the truth and the difficult conversations.

Social justice is a major theme of my Humanities 7 course, and my school uses Dr. Gholdy Muhammad’s HILL framework (development of identity, skills, knowledge, Criticality) to frame our entire curriculum. Student agency through research work and essay writing, and action-oriented civic engagement work, define what we “cover” in my course.
