We can only dismantle harmful white supremacy and make necessary changes for a kind and just world if we equip our future with a practical and truthful education. Every child deserves the truth!

There is such a thing as TRUTH that is unwavering, that cannot use bent and twisted into something else. Lying has become a mainstay in our culture today and must be stopped. I refuse to pretend that our history is full of butterflies and rainbows when it just isn't so. Re-forming history for politicals is a disservice to our country and to our young learners. At 66 years old I have experienced the Civil Right Movement in Chicago and am horrified with what is going on today. Racism is against the constitution and LYING is against what God tells us to do. Stop living in fantasy land and let's get back to truth and justice TODAY!!!

Critical race theory (CRT) is a theoretocal framework that emerged in response to institutionalized racism. CRT is Equity Research! I am signing this petition because CRT Scholars and students deserve the freedom to discuss and analyze the country’s history using multiple theoretical lenses. Equity cannot be obtained by employing a colorblind theoretical lens in a race-based nation that continues to privilege (teach) fragmented (Eurocentric) versions of our country’s history over other’s truths (lived experiences). All students deserve to be given the opportunity to be “free-thinkers” by having a variety of theories and methods to critically analyze why/how institutionalized systems are inequitable for some and not others.

I want my children to grow up knowing the Truth, of why our country got to this point, how we got here, and how the untruths prevailed over society for the longest time. It is our turn to shift the legacy of hate and pave the way for the future of understanding, compassion, foregiveness, acceptance of all humanity, and most important change.

As an educator who is serious about teaching the truth I will not be bullied into silence. I will do my part in the fight for equity and equality by making sure my students are most equipped to fight this ugliness in the real world.

Yes, the truth of American history needs to be taught, but also its impact on the rest of the world, such as its role in WWII. I just finished teaching a college-level course on the Holocaust, and could not believe how little the students knew about the rest of the world’s participation in the war! They seemed to believe that WWII was ended by the US alone!

“When you begin to do things that raise the achievement of the poorest and disenfranchised students, you may not always get applause. You need to be ready for that.” Dr. Asa Hilliard

“Resistance is a powerful motivator precisely because it enables us to fulfill our longing to achieve our goals while letting us boldly recognize and name the obstacles to those achievements.”
    Dr. Derrick Bell

Our young people deserve the truth and it is our kuleana (responsibility) to give space and opportunity for the truth and the difficult conversations.

Social justice is a major theme of my Humanities 7 course, and my school uses Dr. Gholdy Muhammad’s HILL framework (development of identity, skills, knowledge, Criticality) to frame our entire curriculum. Student agency through research work and essay writing, and action-oriented civic engagement work, define what we “cover” in my course.
