I do and have always taught the truth, ever since I was a high school social studies teacher. It is shameful that a majority of the country is unaware of our true past. When former students reach out and thank me for being honest with them, it is all worth it

…it is a moral obligation, personally and professionally. Who am I as an educator, a parent, or a citizen if I am not dedicated to teaching truth?

Teaching TRUTH is the corner stone of social change. It is *well overdue* that the children & youth of this country are taught true history, not force-fed lies that perpetuate & protect a centuries-long racist agenda. I am pledging because I know that true change needs to come from all directions, but my hope is in the generations of anti-racist educators and students who refuse to participate in white supremacist pedagogy and take action against injustice.
Sarah Shives | Vancouver, WA
The truth matters. Black Lives Matter. Honest, authentic, truthful education matters.
Robert Shepherd | Saint Petersburg, FL
The truth matters, and laws against teaching the truth are antithetical to democracy, which depends upon an informed citizenry.
Lindsay Reed | MORENO VALLEY, CA
Lisa Simoneau | Cleveland, OH
All people living in the United States need to know the history of our country in order to be informed citizens who can appalled and take action to create the vision of our country for all people. It is imperative that we teach the truth, teach honest history beginning with the youngest children. Children develop their core values and beliefs before age 7. If we’re going to make this world a better place we must educate our children with truth, honesty and the hope of possibility.
Christine Draper | Beverly, MA
neutrality is complicity
Jason Zaharioudakis | Island Park, NY
I will not perpetuate the Lost Cause narrative. We will not be allowing our students and children to be brainwashed by an establishment that pretends to care about their education, but cares more for keeping them ignorant.
Celeste Travis | Bakersfield, CA
I fully support the efforts to bring the TRUTH about History and Social Studies to all levels and ages of learners.
Naresha Perry | Atlanta, GA

As an educator who is serious about teaching the truth I will not be bullied into silence. I will do my part in the fight for equity and equality by making sure my students are most equipped to fight this ugliness in the real world.
Yes, the truth of American history needs to be taught, but also its impact on the rest of the world, such as its role in WWII. I just finished teaching a college-level course on the Holocaust, and could not believe how little the students knew about the rest of the world’s participation in the war! They seemed to believe that WWII was ended by the US alone!
“When you begin to do things that raise the achievement of the poorest and disenfranchised students, you may not always get applause. You need to be ready for that.” Dr. Asa Hilliard
“Resistance is a powerful motivator precisely because it enables us to fulfill our longing to achieve our goals while letting us boldly recognize and name the obstacles to those achievements.”
Dr. Derrick Bell
Our young people deserve the truth and it is our kuleana (responsibility) to give space and opportunity for the truth and the difficult conversations.
If we don’t teach it all, we teach nothing…
Social justice is a major theme of my Humanities 7 course, and my school uses Dr. Gholdy Muhammad’s HILL framework (development of identity, skills, knowledge, Criticality) to frame our entire curriculum. Student agency through research work and essay writing, and action-oriented civic engagement work, define what we “cover” in my course.
