I will continue to teach truth and not lies to all my students. Nothing and no one will change that.
Jason Austin | Framingham, MA
It is our role to provide students access to the truth, not to indoctrinate them with propaganda. Better said--in the words of my students--we learn history: 1) To not repeat the mistakes of the past; 2) to understand how the past has shaped the present; and 3) To find positive patterns and events from the past to inspire us as to what could be possible in the future.
Candice Walker | Baldwin, NY
Children should know the good, the bad, and the ugly about American History.
Amy Eckert | Lafayette Hill, PA
I care that my students learn true history of our country, their own cultures, and the cultures of others.
Stephanie Waters | Philadelphia, PA
Teaching hard history is important. Even at a young age.
Troy Petrie | Louisville, KY
The fact is, the truth is largely ignored in our Social Studies classrooms. While supporters of this legislation see it as a remedy to some form of perversion of our national narratives, they're really just a white supremacists prophylactic.
Sara Harvey | Framingham, MA
Our children deserve to know the whole truth.
Debbie Flaks | Lafayette Hill, PA
As a South African who attended public school in South Africa during apartheid, I know first-hand the dangers of not teaching the truth. I will never perpetuate a system that consciously chooses to whitewash history.
Erin Tyburski | Bellmead, TX
My students need assurance that public education will validate and value their history, who they love, how they think, and allow them to lead their learning.
Susan Edgerton | Readsboro, VT
I am appalled by the efforts to prevent the teaching of historically accurate accounts of race and racism in the United States. Our democracy depends on having a well educated citizenry.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to teach a song like "Follow the Drinking Gourd" without explaining why it's a code song or why it needed to be in code. The smart students will NOT accept 'have your parents ask your legislators' as an educated answer.

As an educator who is serious about teaching the truth I will not be bullied into silence. I will do my part in the fight for equity and equality by making sure my students are most equipped to fight this ugliness in the real world.

Yes, the truth of American history needs to be taught, but also its impact on the rest of the world, such as its role in WWII. I just finished teaching a college-level course on the Holocaust, and could not believe how little the students knew about the rest of the world’s participation in the war! They seemed to believe that WWII was ended by the US alone!

“When you begin to do things that raise the achievement of the poorest and disenfranchised students, you may not always get applause. You need to be ready for that.” Dr. Asa Hilliard

“Resistance is a powerful motivator precisely because it enables us to fulfill our longing to achieve our goals while letting us boldly recognize and name the obstacles to those achievements.”
    Dr. Derrick Bell

Our young people deserve the truth and it is our kuleana (responsibility) to give space and opportunity for the truth and the difficult conversations.

Social justice is a major theme of my Humanities 7 course, and my school uses Dr. Gholdy Muhammad’s HILL framework (development of identity, skills, knowledge, Criticality) to frame our entire curriculum. Student agency through research work and essay writing, and action-oriented civic engagement work, define what we “cover” in my course.
