the truth should not be hidden
Orion Bradshaw | Portland, OR
The Truth might just set this next generation FREE… “We know what we are, but know not what we may be.”
Sue Nussbaum | Roanoke, VA
We need to teach truth! Why are we only worried about offending white children and making them feel guilty. As a white adult, I believe that my grandchildren need to understand the challenges and inequity of life as a person of color.
TIna Monaco-Glynn | Piedmont, CA
Chelsea Green | New York, NY
education should be liberatory!

I believe that our children should be taught the truth about our history. If we don’t face and acknowledge the truth, we are doomed to repeat it.

it is absurd that the comfort of white adults be placed above the truth on which our country was founded and continues to systemically uphold. don't like the history? quit repeating the behaviors and supporting the structures that allowed that history to unfold.

DANIELLE JOHNSON | Newton, MA
Vongphachanh Mymala | San Leandro, CA
It's important for the current/generation to learn history and truths, even if they're uncomfortable. Once we name/acknowledge the societal inequities, more can start to actually do something about homelessness in the SF Bay Area.

Children deserve to learn the truth so that they can be the unbiased citizens of tomorrow, and the United States can become a truly free country for everyone.

it is immoral to teach white-washed lies to children, and it hurts all of us to do so.
Genevieve Dusing | Boston, MA
I want all students to learn the truth about our country's history, so they can learn from it and do better than those who came before them. People cannot build stronger, safer communities if they do not understand how the world got to where it is now.
Sylvia Thompson | Chula Vista, CA
I want my grandchildren and all children to know the truth . It’s important that we be real with our children . Their lives depend on it .

Jennifer Munday | Glendale, CA

The full truth of the United States needs to be taught, from it's inception around the indigenous to the African American enslavement to how it effects our daily lives in 2022. Heather McGhee, economist, quantifies the cost of racism in this country. Every teacher, principal and legislator should read it!
Kathryn Black Lance | Baxter, MN
I believe the truth needs to be told. For the sake of my students of color and my Lakota/ Anishanabe/ German children, the truth needs to be told. It’s how we can stop the cycle- through education- one person at a time.
Dawn Bertrand , NC
Truth matters. Honesty matters. History needs to be taught from the perspective of all people.
Elizabeth Schutt | Scarsdale, NY

As an educator who is serious about teaching the truth I will not be bullied into silence. I will do my part in the fight for equity and equality by making sure my students are most equipped to fight this ugliness in the real world.
Yes, the truth of American history needs to be taught, but also its impact on the rest of the world, such as its role in WWII. I just finished teaching a college-level course on the Holocaust, and could not believe how little the students knew about the rest of the world’s participation in the war! They seemed to believe that WWII was ended by the US alone!
“When you begin to do things that raise the achievement of the poorest and disenfranchised students, you may not always get applause. You need to be ready for that.” Dr. Asa Hilliard
“Resistance is a powerful motivator precisely because it enables us to fulfill our longing to achieve our goals while letting us boldly recognize and name the obstacles to those achievements.”
Dr. Derrick Bell
Our young people deserve the truth and it is our kuleana (responsibility) to give space and opportunity for the truth and the difficult conversations.
If we don’t teach it all, we teach nothing…
Social justice is a major theme of my Humanities 7 course, and my school uses Dr. Gholdy Muhammad’s HILL framework (development of identity, skills, knowledge, Criticality) to frame our entire curriculum. Student agency through research work and essay writing, and action-oriented civic engagement work, define what we “cover” in my course.
