As soon as I found out about this pledge I knew I had to sign up. We won't let white supremacists stop us from teaching the truth!

Students can handle the truth, and if we want our world to improve, we must present our students with truthful information presented with a wide variety of perspectives.
Nicole Casper | Anacortes, WA
Educating our children about the true history of our country, including the injustice and oppression, is the only way to ensure we don't repeat that history, and make a better world for all.
Karena Myers | Milford, PA
Kally Muenster | Saint Paul, MN
Teaching our children the nation’s correct history is so important. We need that so the system can change.
Karma Nordstrom | Ann Arbor, MI
Jenni Manfredi | Hatfield, MA
We will not achieve our goal of racial equity until we can fully understand its roots and its current impact on our systems and institutions. If we know and examine the truth about our nation's history, we can make the essential changes to become the model democracy we claim to be. Our students deserve the truth. Our students demand the truth.
Nomi Hurwitz | Providence, RI
I am so grateful for the teachers who have opened intellectual doors for my classmates and me. We owe no less to our students today.

As a wildlife biologist who educates children and adults about the beautiful places in their backyards, it's my responsibility to tell the whole truth of these places and not a white-washed version.
Petty Phile | Las Vegas, NV
We must show our children that we can express real love, real physical love for them particularly after class.
Max Giese | Round Rock, TX
I hold a firm belief that racism is at the core of U.S. History so trying to restrict the education of it will make teaching history massively difficult. Children deserve an accurate grasp of history.

As an educator who is serious about teaching the truth I will not be bullied into silence. I will do my part in the fight for equity and equality by making sure my students are most equipped to fight this ugliness in the real world.

Yes, the truth of American history needs to be taught, but also its impact on the rest of the world, such as its role in WWII. I just finished teaching a college-level course on the Holocaust, and could not believe how little the students knew about the rest of the world’s participation in the war! They seemed to believe that WWII was ended by the US alone!

“When you begin to do things that raise the achievement of the poorest and disenfranchised students, you may not always get applause. You need to be ready for that.” Dr. Asa Hilliard

“Resistance is a powerful motivator precisely because it enables us to fulfill our longing to achieve our goals while letting us boldly recognize and name the obstacles to those achievements.”
    Dr. Derrick Bell

Our young people deserve the truth and it is our kuleana (responsibility) to give space and opportunity for the truth and the difficult conversations.

Social justice is a major theme of my Humanities 7 course, and my school uses Dr. Gholdy Muhammad’s HILL framework (development of identity, skills, knowledge, Criticality) to frame our entire curriculum. Student agency through research work and essay writing, and action-oriented civic engagement work, define what we “cover” in my course.
