I am signing this petition because I believe my students need to know our whole history, and specifically how history has been written and controlled by hetero-white males and how they want us to view history through a whitewashed lens that does not honor all genders and cultures, particularly those who are marginalized by our society and have been since the birth of this nation.
Deidre Druk | Saint Paul, MN
I believe teachers should teach the truth about US History showing what is beautiful and what is not so beautiful in order to create a better tomorrow. I want to be in solidarity with others who believe this too.

It is critical that young children are helped to feel seen and safe as they build positive identities, build language to describe unfairness, and are supported to recognize and interrupt racism as unfair and hurtful patterns.

I believe the truth should never been hidden, and am completely against oppression of any kind of diversity. Buried truths lead to oppressed people, which can lead to a tremendous amount of pain and suffering, or even death.
David Ward | New York, NY
I am an Urban school teacher, teaching primarily black and brown students who need to be exposed to the truth about the entire history of this country. They need to learn about the contributions of non white citizens beyond slavery and sports and entertainment. People of color are the labor force upon which economic power of this country was built.

I feel like these laws are propping up system of oppression and violate the tenets of evidence based history.

Failure to teach historical truth leads to unthinking citizens with an inability to fight to protect their rights.

As an educator who is serious about teaching the truth I will not be bullied into silence. I will do my part in the fight for equity and equality by making sure my students are most equipped to fight this ugliness in the real world.
Yes, the truth of American history needs to be taught, but also its impact on the rest of the world, such as its role in WWII. I just finished teaching a college-level course on the Holocaust, and could not believe how little the students knew about the rest of the world’s participation in the war! They seemed to believe that WWII was ended by the US alone!
“When you begin to do things that raise the achievement of the poorest and disenfranchised students, you may not always get applause. You need to be ready for that.” Dr. Asa Hilliard
“Resistance is a powerful motivator precisely because it enables us to fulfill our longing to achieve our goals while letting us boldly recognize and name the obstacles to those achievements.”
Dr. Derrick Bell
Our young people deserve the truth and it is our kuleana (responsibility) to give space and opportunity for the truth and the difficult conversations.
If we don’t teach it all, we teach nothing…
Social justice is a major theme of my Humanities 7 course, and my school uses Dr. Gholdy Muhammad’s HILL framework (development of identity, skills, knowledge, Criticality) to frame our entire curriculum. Student agency through research work and essay writing, and action-oriented civic engagement work, define what we “cover” in my course.
