We have supported the fallacy that ending slavery was equivalent to ending racism. To this day, racists use emancipation as a playing field leveler as if our debt to black Americans has been paid.

I am signing this petition because students' understanding of this history is one piece of part of what is needed to combat entrenched white supremacy in schools and in this country. Students will have a the knowledge to connect their present with the accurate history of the United States of America. Knowledge is not all that is needed, but it is definitely a critical part to move forward and not forget.

Because racism endures. And this must change.

It is too often glossed over.Students don't realize that the imposition of Jim Crow wasn't inevitable. The similarity between the black freedom struggle then and now is important. It has been argued that the rise in white supremacy currently is a backlash to a modern Reconstruction project. Those parallels are essential to explore and understand.
