Students need to understand this was a total reset for America- a chance for a multi-racial democracy following on the heels of the defeat of the Confederacy and the passage of the Reconstruction amendments (13, 14 and 15). The first Black Representatives and Senators as well as all of the other advancement for Black Americans as soon as they were freed from enslavement are vital for students to understand. Also, how the destructive policies of the Black Codes, the domestic terrorism of the Klan and other terrorists and the period of Redemption from the white Southern Democrats stopped this pivotal period of history and we struggled with 100 years of legalized segregation (1865- 1965) that followed all of those years (1619- 1865) of legalized enslavement.
