“Join Me,” Says Zinn Education Project Co-Founder William Holtzman

Dear friends of the Zinn Education Project,

More than 10 years ago, I wrote my beloved professor, Howard Zinn. I had just watched the documentary about him: You Can’t Be Neutral on a Moving Train.

The movie recounted his amazing life — and drove home his intelligence, decency, and courage.

William Holtzman and Howard Zinn, 2008.

I told Howard that it was “pay back” time and I wanted to extend his work. We decided to focus on teachers. We thought teachers were the key. Give them resources to teach people’s history and, ultimately, our kids would see the world more clearly, and be equipped to take action.

Howard put me in touch with two outstanding education non-profits, Teaching for Change and Rethinking Schools.

Bingo. The Zinn Education Project (ZEP) was born. Way back then, I challenged the ZEP team to sign up 100,000 teachers to reach millions of students.

We blew past the number last month, which makes us a significant force in education. A significant force that pumps out an amazing flow of innovative materials — all 100 percent free.

Now we are poised to make an even bigger impact.

At the beginning of this effort, I funded most of the start-up expenses and then agreed to support ZEP with annual donations.

I ask you to join me and sign up as a sustaining donor.

When we can rely on a steady, predictable source of funding, it allows us to focus on more important things: producing people’s history materials designed to captivate and educate.

Your support allows us to counterbalance corporate history books with resources to teach outside the textbook.

Today through the end of this year, I am willing to match all new monthly or quarterly sustaining donations by December 31 up to $15,000. $10 a month? $100 a month? $250 a quarter? Your donation will be doubled.

Join this noble cause… support those who support you.

Sincerely,

William Holtzman
