Teacher-Led Study Groups Are Communities of Resistance and Hope

In a time of censorship and political repression, teacher-led study groups are building communities of resistance and hope.

Each participant in a Zinn Education Project Teaching for Black Lives study group receives a copy of Rethinking Schools’ Teaching for Black Lives book, a subscription to Rethinking Schools magazine, a year-long menu of workshops and seminars to choose from, and access to a national network of social justice educators.

Why form a Teaching for Black Lives study group?

The collaboration and conversation about relevant and real topics facing educators was phenomenal. It was not only an opportunity to read and reflect, it was an opportunity to share, find support, and encouragement in the fight ahead.

— Alana Ward, SCEA UniServ director and group coordinator, North Charleston, South Carolina

Being a coordinator of a Teaching for Black Lives study group is an honor and a dedicated responsibility. We are truly organizers who are using our collective voices, values, and dedication to change unfair mandates that affect youth, their families, and the education that they receive.

— Ina Pannell-Saint Surin, teacher mentor and group coordinator, Brooklyn, New York

Listen to more study group coordinators at our informational session on Tuesday, August 11, 2026 at 7:00 pm ET. You’ll have a chance to meet with other educators and gain ideas for forming your own group.

Don’t go into the new school year alone. Apply to host a study group in your school, district, or statewide.

We want to hear your story about the impact of anti-history education laws, executive orders, the “chilling effect” in your school or school district, and how educators and communities are resisting this repression.

Your response will help the wider public understand how education is being censored and how some school districts are responding by defending the freedom to learn. In appreciation, we can send you one of the books pictured in the graphic above.
