Sending Books to Classrooms to Challenge Book Bans

In 2025, there were increased attacks on teaching history, including anti-history education executive orders and book bans.

To counter these attacks, we secured donations from authors and publishers to increase classroom access to the books listed below on people’s history.

460 copies: Original Sins: The (Mis)education of Black and Native Children and the Construction of American Racism by Eve L. Ewing

300 copies: The Rediscovery of America: Native Peoples and the Unmaking of U.S. History by Ned Blackhawk

300 copies: Erasing History: How Fascists Rewrite the Past to Control the Future by Jason Stanley

160 copies: Black History Is for Everyone by Brian Jones

150 copies: King of the North: Martin Luther King Jr.’s Life of Struggle Outside the South by Jeanne Theoharis

100 copies: How the Word Is Passed: Remembering Slavery and How it Shaped America (Adapted for Young Readers) by Clint Smith

100 copies: Teach Truth: The Struggle for Antiracist Education by Jesse Hagopian

100 copies: Fry Bread: A Native American Family Story by Kevin Noble Maillard

50 copies: Will’s Race for Home by Jewell Parker Rhodes

and more.

Our staff did the outreach and screening to ensure that the invitation to request books reached teachers and school librarians throughout the country.

While the books are donated, it takes considerable staff time to promote and process the requests — and to collect teaching stories. Donations from individuals — like YOU — make that possible.
