Rethinking Schools is co-coordinator (along with Teaching for Change) of the Zinn Education Project and the majority of lessons on this website originate in Rethinking Schools publications. Launched in 1986, Rethinking Schools is a nonprofit publisher working for equity and justice in public schools and the broader society.

Rethinking Schools MagazineVOLUME 40, NO. 3 – Spring 2026 The spring issue of Rethinking Schools takes a deep dive into the teacher organizing that helped produce the January uprising in Minneapolis against ICE. A Minneapolis resident describes what it’s like to live under ICE’s Operation Metro Surge and the crucial role teachers and schools have played in building resistance. Journalist Sarah Jaffe describes how social justice teacher unionism in the Twin Cities laid the foundation for the inspiring, imaginative response to the ICE invasion. The issue also includes an article by Rethinking Schools editor Linda Christensen about helping students write “unbound” essays about topics that impact their lives. In another piece, a 5th-grade teacher modifies and expands Rethinking Schools’ Columbus trial into a unit. The issue includes two reflections from administrators — one about the importance of creating and supporting Dual Language programs and biliteracy, and another detailing efforts to rebuild community after losing his school to the Eaton Fire.
