Join the 2024 Day of Action

In this election year, educators and allies are planning creative Teach Truth Day of Action events all over the country. Here are some examples. Check back as this list is updated daily. And add your city!

California

Auburn: Information table at Placer County Library. June 8, 10:00 am – 2:00 pm.

Coachella: Information table at the Coachella Library. June 8, 8:00 am to 12 noon.

Los Angeles: Information table and book swap at the Playa Vista Farmers Market.

San Diego: Educators will hold signs in front of the San Diego Unified School District Ed Center. June 8, 10:00 am-1:00 pm.

San Jose: Information table at the First AME Zion Churxh of San Jose, first Black church and school in San Jose, by the Santa Clara Alliance of Black Educators, in partnership African History Museum of Silicon Valley, African American Community Services, (TABIA) Tabia African-American Theatre Ensemble, and 100 Black Men of Silicon Valley. June 14, 6:00pm.

Connecticut

Hartford: The Harriet Beecher Stowe Center. Information table, book swap, history walking tour. Co-hosted by the Mark Twain House Museu, Asylum Hill Neighborhood Association, and HartBeat Ensemble. June 8, 11:00 am – 3:00 pm.

New Haven: Information table, book swap, and teach-in at the Possible Futures Bookstore, hosted by the Anti-Racist Teaching and Learning Collective. June 8.

District of Columbia

The D.C. Area Educators for Social Justice have tables at three bookstores and a farmers’ market in Washington, D.C. on June 8 and a booth at the Capital Pride Festival on June 9.

Florida

Lake Worth Beach: Compass LGBTQ+ Community Center will host an information table at the Delray Pride and Pride 5K, Health & Wellness Expo. June 8, 3:45 – 7:30 pm and 5:00 – 9:00 pm.

Miami: The New Republic is hosting a Right to Read celebration featuring the first ever Toni Morrison Award for Courage at the Pérez Art Museum Miami on June 8 at 5:30 p.m. The evening will feature authors who are currently banned or who have been banned in the recent past; fellow writers who have taken up the cause; and teachers, librarians, and students who have been directly impacted by book bans. Georgia

Atlanta: Students near Stone Mountain, Georgia will investigate the largest Confederate monument in the world and how the adjacent historically African American community of Shermantown has resisted the hate it represents. Students will report out to the community as part of the Teach Truth Day of Action. RSVP.

Illinois

Paris: Information table at farmers market. June 8, 9:00 am – 12 noon.

Schaumburg: Peyton Consulting LLC will host an information table at Summer Youth-led Pow Wow and Northwest Pridefest at the Trickster Cultural Center. June 22 and June 29, 2:00 pm – 7:00 pm.

Iowa

Iowa City: Iowans for Youth & Truth will rally at historic College Green Park. They will have live music, a book exchange, a postcard station, a chance to pledge to teach the truth and defend LGBTQ+ rights, and opportunities to network and strategize. RSVP.

Kansas

Kansas City: Teach Truth March from Huron Cemetery to Kinship Cafe. Inspiring speakers at each stop. Participants are encouraged to bring used books for a “banned books” swap. June 8, 10:00 am. Read more.

Louisiana

Baton Rouge: NEA Black Caucus will host a historic walking tour at the Whitney Plantation. June 8, 12:00 noon – 2:00 pm.

New Orleans: The Plessy and Ferguson Initiative is hosting Plessy Day 2024: Your Vote, Your Voice! at the REACH Center (part of the New Orleans Public Library) in New Orleans’ historic 7th Ward. Their invitation says: Join us for the 15th annual Plessy Day where in this election year, we will celebrate the 59th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act and honor local civil rights veterans who fought for voting rights, equal access, and full citizenship. Speakers include Mr. Ronnie Moore and Mrs. Dorotha Smith-Simmons, veterans of the New Orleans Chapter of C.O.R.E. (Congress of Racial Equality). There will be kids activities led by the Black School to create art with the theme of voting rights. June 8, 10:00 am – 1:30 pm.

Maryland

Annapolis:

A dynamic event hosted by Key School, featuring a diverse range of activities! The event will commence with opening remarks by County Executive Pittman, followed by the distribution of books collected through the Dream Big Book Drive. Immerse yourself in music, informative displays, and express gratitude to authors at a letter writing station. Engage in captivating read-aloud sessions, unleash your creativity with chalk drawing, and make lasting memories! Showing Up for Racial Justice Annapolis and Anne Arundel County (SURJ3A) is hosting a #TeachTruth table at the Annapolis Juneteenth Festival! Opportunities to win banned books, Teach Truth buttons and other giveaways. June 22.

Severna Park: Community organizations will share information, and there will be activities and presentations every hour on the hour where all are welcome to come and learn. There will be a story time, speakers, crafts, a photo station, a voter registration table, a banned book display and exchange, and more. Park Books, June 8, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm. Read more.

Acton: Silver Unicorn Bookstore, information table and rally hosted by a member of First Church Unitarian, Littleton. June 8 11:00 am – 3:00 pm.

Boston: Information table at the Full-Service Community Schools Summit. Hosted by Massachusetts Teachers Assoc, Massachusetts Educational Justice Alliance, Boston Teachers Union, American Federation of Teachers.

Deerfield: Pride Party celebrating the LGBTQIA+ Community at the Deerfield Elementary School. Activities include story time, arts and crafts, outdoor games, action/education booth, and more. Hosted by Deerfield Inclusion Group. June 8, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Northampton: Sojourner Truth Statue. Information table and history walking tour. Hosted by the Mount Holyoke DEI Office, Odyssey Bookstore, David Ruggles Center. June 9 at 1:00 pm.

Minnesota

St. Paul: Information table at the Grand Old Day outdoor family street fair and festival. Table hosted by educators from the Laura Jeffrey Academy Middle School. June 2, 9:00 am – 6:00 pm.

Mississippi

Jackson: History walking tour. Council of Federated Organizations. Hosted by the Mississippi Council National Council of Negro Women, and more.

New Jersey

Montclair: AAPI New Jersey will have an information table at Out Montclair’s Pride Festival, the largest in New Jersey. June 8, 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm.

Ocean City: Information table at Ocean City Pride Fest at the Ocean City Civics Center. June 1, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm.

Paterson: Teach-in Centering Palestine at the Art Factory Studio. The event will start with lunch, then followed by a documentary and educational/informational workshops that will be lecture and discussion based. You are welcome to attend any/all. Children’s activities will be taking place (for ages 5-14) for anyone in need of child care who is attending. Rochester: Information table at the Rochester Public Market hosted by the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) Committee. June 8, 8:30 am – 2:30 pm.

Rome: Information table at the Fort Stanwix National Monument “soap box corner.” Hosted by Women Who Read. June 8, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm.

Syracuse: Information table. Lush Cosmetics at Destiny Mall. June 8, 12:00 noon – 4:00 pm.

White Plains: Information table at a booth at the Annual Juneteenth Parade and Festival on June 8 and at the African American Heritage Festival at Kensico Dam in Valhalla on June 23. The booth is coordinated by the NAACP White Plains/Greenburgh Branch which will also share information on voting and NAACP membership.

North Carolina

Cary: Wake NCAE will host an information table, rally, and deliver a petition for school library funding during the school board meeting in Crossroads I Building. June 4, 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Learn more and RSVP.

Ohio

Cleveland

The Cleveland NAACP Education Committee, Cleveland Teachers Union, and Honesty for Ohio Education will host an event at the Cleveland Public Library, downtown branch. They will begin with a “Read Flash Mob” in the reading garden located next to the library. Then, participants will enter the library to tables of free banned books and banned library books available for checking out. There will also be an information table. The program will consist of a poetry presentation by Cleveland’s poet laureate, a “Why This Matters” talk from the District 11 teacher of the year, a speech from a college student, and a presentation from a Freedom Rider. Light refreshments will be available. June 8, 11:00 am – 2:00 pm

The Angel Heart Foundation will host an information table, book swap, and teach-in at the Euclid Library. June 8, 12 noon – 4:00pm

Kent: Outdoor Tour of the May 4 National Historic Landmark Site, Kent State University. June 7, 1:00 pm.
