Lawmakers in at least 15 states are attempting to pass legislation that would require teachers to lie to students about the role of racism, sexism, heterosexism, and oppression throughout U.S. history. To raise public awareness about the danger of these bills, educators will make that pledge public in gatherings nationwide on Saturday, June 12, 2021.
This is a national call. While bills and budget resolutions are being proposed (and in some cases passed) in specific states, the threat to teaching — and the need for solidarity — is everywhere.
Help amplify teachers’ voices against these bills: Take the pledge to teach the truth and attend the Day of Action event in Richmond (directions) on June 12, or plan your own event.
Richmond-area educators, pre-K through college, are invited to meet on Saturday, 9:00 am, at 328 Arthur Ashe Boulevard, to pledge to #TeachTruth about systemic racism and all forms of “Other-ing” and oppression. This is the local event for the nationwide Day of Action organized by the Zinn Education Project.
Participants will share coffee, build camaraderie, and hold space in front of the Daughters of the Confederacy’s national headquarters, ”ground zero” for the construction of and dissemination of harmful, revisionist narratives of U.S. history, narratives which erase the lived experiences of Black, Brown, indigenous, LGBTQ, Jewish, Muslim, and first generation Americans, narratives that minimize the harm caused by embedded, “baked-in“ systemic racism, homophobia, anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and all forms of “Other-ing.”
