I dedicate a significant amount of time in my social studies curriculum for learning about how perspective — where people are coming from and what motivates or influences them — plays a key role in how we understand history.

The People vs. Columbus trial deeply solidified students’ understanding of perspective in a more concrete way. We did the trial the days following Columbus Day and students continue to reference it when we bring up “perspective.” It’s wonderful to see a lesson have that big of an effect on student learning while making it fun.
